In 1965, Jack Cartlidge pioneered his copper repoussée technique, employing a metal armature enveloped in hammered and welded copper. The outcome was a collection of monumental sculptures. This approach drew inspiration from the construction methods and patina found on the Statue of Liberty. The Cartlidge copper sculptures were restored to showcase their natural Patina Verde. These patinas possessed a depth and richness that enhanced their resilience against the challenges posed by marine and salt air environments, resulting in a steadfast hue. Our restoration process began with an exhaustive cleansing of each sculpture, effectively eradicating oxidation while addressing necessary repairs. Subsequently, we hand-applied the patina to each piece, utilizing Jack Cartlidge’s original formula to ensure authenticity and preservation.

Of the eight pieces in the city’s collection, one had originally been made of Ferro Cement. The Earth Mother, in its state at that time, had been cast in resin and painted a pale pink. The method for restoring this type of sculpture was different from that of the other copper pieces. The original Japanese Brown Patina had been a darker earth tone with a mottled texture. The original patina technique was used to restore this piece to its original beauty.
